reflection on gis 520 as a whole
If I learned anything this semester from GIS 520, I learned (or was reminded) that GIS is a very powerful and useful application that can take ordinary geographic data that represents our world and manipulate it to create geographic information that is applicable to the real world. Throughout the semester, I was continually wowed by the manifold capabilities of ArcGIS and simultaneously thankful that I did not have to perform all those calculations by hand! What would we do without this convenient and available computing power? This leads me to another lesson or reminder from this course: computers have truly revolutionized how we view, create, and interact with maps.
I really liked this course from the standpoint that we covered a wide variety of ArcGIS applications throughout the duration of the semester. There were multiple assignments that introduced me to a concept for the first time. Other assignments improved my understanding on topics that I had previously learned about elsewhere. Additionally, I liked how this course challenged me to critically think about the implications of each topic as I had to record my reflections for each assignment as well as attempt to come up with similar but more complex situations than those presented in the coursework. Doing this made me take what I had learned and apply it, thus helping me understand the main goals of each assignment better.
In all, I believe that GIS 520,has made me more competent in navigating through and working with ArcGIS, especially in creating exportable maps. I am thus more comfortable with using ArcGIS and feel that I can apply it under real-world circumstances. I not only learned new things from the course...my "ArcGIS muscle" was built-up and my ArcGIS skills refined.
